This has to be a first
sorry if I just came off as a d**k.
To each their own. I love watches and I will continue to collect them. How would you feel if you spent 1500 on an aev bumper and rear ended someone the next day only to have someone say you deserved it cause the lod bumper only costs 400? I am not arguing and not trying to start a bad discussion. I just feel bad for him for spending a lot on something and have problems.

To me, a watch just tells time. I don't like to spend too much on watches, because I tend to scratch them up alot, or I'll loose it somehow... or something like that.
I didn't mean to offend you or anything, (if i did???), I'm just in awe, really. I never really understood the diamond and women thing either. The bigger and more expensive, the better. To me, it's a rock I can't wheel over...
That's crazy. Are you sure it uses sapphire crystal?
I think my Rolex Explorer II uses sapphire crystal. It's over 10 years old and took it everywhere... bumped into rocks, rub against sand etc. and has no major scratch on it.

So, to make up for being an a-hole and pouncing on people for spending money on hobbies, I decided to check out Breitling. Hopefully he bought it at a an authorized Breitling seller (not online) because there is no warranty for online purchases.
I guess there is a two year warranty on them, but there are no details as to whether or not it covers the sapphire.
About sapphire: It's very difficult to scratch, but not impossible to crack. Just like diamonds. The sapphire used in making watches is considered "Synthetic" so maybe there was a flaw in it that made it more likely to break?
Also, of note, I guess wikipedia says that some synthetic countertops are made of materials in the 9-10 hardness range (sapphire is a 9.... diamond is a 10). Something can only scratch if it is touched by something harder than what it is. So, accidentally rubbing a Sapphire crystal along a countertop could cause it to scratch easily.... Not that this has any relevance to a stickshift...

Oh, no, I understand. Everybody has their own thing. It stinks that his new watch is busted, but I'm just the kind of guy who thinks that if I'm going to spend a lot of money on something, it better be good.

2 questions:
1. should a sapphire crystal break from being impacted by a plastic gearshift knob? I know sapphire is scratch resistant to everything but other sapphires and diamonds but what about impact resistance? I am thinking he bought a bogus watch.
2. Does everyone elses gear shift knob travel like 3-4 inches as the suspension flexs? Obviously length of shift lever has a lot to do with this.[/QUOTE]
1. Sapphire Crystal can break as a result of direct impact. It is a rare for it to occur but it does happen. Covered under the 2 year international warranty. The major benefit of Sapphire Crystal is its anti scratching properties as opposed to Mineral glass and Plexi glass.

First of all, I hope you're not considering paying for a replacement for him, or even feeling guilty about it. I HATE it when somebody is riding in my vehicle and they start fuuken with the dials and radio and such. He should have kept his hands to himself and asked you to turn up the heat if he was cold.
I would not even START to feel guilty about that!
Plus, I'm guessing that most of the momentum of the "meeting" was movement of HIS ARM, rather than the shift lever. But, either way, he should've been keepin' his hands to himself.

While how much I'd spend on a watch (don't even own one) is totally irrelevant, you stick around this forum long enough and you do hear the weirdest stories. What are the odds of a stick shift bustin' out your passenger's high $$$ watch?

I dunno... Those stock sticks can flap around like wild if you're at speed and hit a bump.
I have a Krieger Automatic with a saphire glass. I have (accidently) knocked it against concrete walls, my Jeep, and various other things and I still have yet to scratch it.
I would think that either it is a bogus watch or the saphire had a fault of some kind in it. I have no idea what a new glass would cost, but I imagine it would get really expensive to fix if the hands or face were damaged.
