I did something stupid.

I was changing my oil my garage in 100 degree weather, and when I finished I turned on my jeep and oil started flying everywhere. I seriously thought I broke my jeep. Turns out I didn't tighten the oil filter enough. I drove it about 10 miles to dinner and on the drive home I remembered that when I was tightening the oil filter it felt weird. I went to check the old filter in the trash can and it turns out my fears were correct. The old filter didn't have a seal on. So now my jeep has two seals. It's not leaking now, but I guess I will have to do another oil change tommorow, unless anyone here has run there jeep safely with two o-rings?.

Don't run with two filter o-rings.
No need to change the oil if you didn't lose much.

Get into the habit of cleaning the surface the filter seats onto and this won't happen again.

My dad did this at his shop back in the early 80s and had to replace the customers engine. Remove that now before you have to do the same.

You guys a right. I will change it tommorrow.

RubiKing 06-28-2013 06:05 PM

You guys are right. I will change it tomorrow. I was being careless. Sad part is I have done many oil changes.

Common mistake! least you didn't forget to put the drain plug back in!

OH9JK 06-29-2013 12:17 AM

At least you remembered to fill it back up with oil!

Or put the oil cap back on. During my college days my about 6 of us took my parents minivan to visits a friend in Ohio..about halfway thru West Virginia the engine starts to smoke..pull over and open the hood and their is oil all over the place.

The Fu@king oil change place didn't put the oil cap back on

It was actually very easy to remove the second gasket without spilling oil. It doesn't seem like there is any oil above the oil filter when the engine is off. Besides the small amount in the oil filter.
