I have heard that tuning makes a huge difference (also on my list to do once we have the 35s) so that is something to consider if you don't want to put out the $$$ to upgrade the gears. Curious about the braking part though...can you explain that?
I would consider tuning a requirement with an auto rather than an option, honestly. Otherwise your jeep will drive like a nightmare.

What speeds are you guys running? I live in South Dakota and we have 65 mph on most roads. I've driven about 300 miles and 5th gear ( auto) is useless. I'll have to wait for a nice day to see if it works. It's drivable but I'll be doing 4:10's come tax return for hailing my atv. I'm running a 2012 JKU with 3:21 auto, 3" BDS lift, 35x12.50R20 Nitto Trails on 20x12 Black Rhino Wheels.

I think tuning is a requirement for all vehicles. Just tuned my husband's Mustang GT the other day and what a difference. I can't wait to see the difference with my JKU.

Speaking of tuners, do you have any experience with tuning a DD? Any tunes you recommend?

I think it depends where you live. I'm on the west coast and run Washington, Oregon, and Californication. Running 4.56 on stock 32" tires and its perfect. Wish I had chosen 4.88 so it would be perfect when I go to 33-34" tires.

Problem with 35s, 3.21, and the auto is the TC doesn't want to lock up so you are basically running a 1952 Buick DynaFlow all the time. (The DynaFlow was an almost gearless slushbox that ran with a loose TC instead of gears.)

But it *will* go down the road, and in low range who cares, I guess.

Sure thing. The 35s are much heavier than the stock wheels and tires. All the extra weight makes your jeep heavier and harder to stop. What I meant is, the 35s make you not able to stop quite as fast

I'm in the hills and plains of Virginia and on any given day I only get up to 50 mph. When I travel to go wheeling, I'm running 60-70 Mph the whole way. The interesting thing is if I can muster the courage to run 75+ in my JK, 6th gear becomes somewhat useful again! It's just geared too high (numerically low)

The 4.10 will be much better but you MIGHT want to consider 4.56's if you're towing in addition to the 35's (Just my opinion)

I drive a manual so my tuner is the far left pedal and under my right hand My buddy ran 35's on his auto for under a day before tuning his. The jeep had absolutely no idea when to shift and overdrive was on and off then on and off again. At one point he was going over 45 mph in second gear and it still wouldn't shift. I think he used a pro-cal? or Flash cal? I'm sorry, I wish I could be more helpful, but driving the manual trans makes most of the tuner stuff irrelevant to me.

[QUOTE="JK505;4034889"] I'm in the hills and plains of Virginia and on any given day I only get up to 50 mph. When I travel to go wheeling, I'm running 60-70 Mph the whole way. The only thing I worry about with 4.56's is the fact that I don't see interstate travel happening when I can run 80 mph. I could be wrong but it seems like I'd run a bit high in the rpms.

I like my 3.21s though. Haven't towed yet with 35's so that could be fun. It's totally drivable and loves 4th gear.

Not sure what happened to the first post so here's the easier to understand version!

I couldn't stand my 3.21s. Had that for about a year and finally regeared to 4.88s about 2 months ago. Finally have power to run up hills without it feeling as though it's bogging down.
I love my rig again.

I run 33ish tires on 18s with my 3.21s and I have no issues with them as they are. My plan was to go 35's but opt not to go that route as I read that it is not so much drive-ability but more of wear and tear on components. extra stress on axle shafts and others parts.

The question I would ask is how much do you all drive off road and what kind of driving is it. Here in So cal most tend to do a lot of rock crawling so to me that would play a part of 35s and the gears. being the extra stress on the axle shafts and extra weight.
