Default Questions about the Islander...

My wife is a recent proud owner of a 2010 surf blue islander. Went through hell just trying to find one in the color she wanted.

Exactly how many Islanders were made? I've heard as many as 1500 and as low as "in the hundreds" according to allpar.com

Anybody know for sure?

Default More I think

I've seen numbers somewhere that the Islander and Mountain Editions (the Mountain Edition is so sweet) were made in a quantity of up to 5000 units each for nationwide distribution, but don't hold me to that 'cause I can't remember where I read it and I read it shortly after they were introduced. I don't know if Jeep made any easy way (by VIN) to tell since basically they were just considered Sport models with a option package added (Islander package or Mountain Package).

I nearly picked up a Mountain Edition this year in Mango Tango but decided to wait for the '11 and maybe '12 model year changes. Now that I've seen the changes I'm glad I waited. I do hope they decide to offer these packages again though. But I suspect it would be at least a model year or two before we see these types of option packages again. The '11 interior changes and the upcoming engine changes will be enough for now to keep the public's consumer attention on the Wrangler line and Jeep will probably keep special package editions on the shelf again for a time when they want to spark up interest in the Wrangler line.....probably at least 'til the '13 model year.

Still, congrats on the Islander and being a two Jeep household!

I read somewhere that there were 4900 Islanders made. Don't know how true it is, I would like to know also.

I think the most common number heard is around 5000. However if its anything like past Chrysler products, dealers may make a few of their own if some spare rubicon parts laying around.

There have also been reports that the islander will return for the 2011 model year.

Default Right on...

Thanks for the info guys. I hate when dealers can "make" limited addition vehicles. It shouldn't be legal IMO. Since we live in Raleigh we had to have one beach jeep and one mountain jeep... ok, my jeep's not a mountain edition, maybe i should say trail jeep?

Jeep is said to be doing away with the current 202 hp 3.8 V6 used in the Wrangler and Unlimited and going with a new Pentastar motor. Actually I think it is going in the new '11 Grand Cherokees already. Anyhow, I'm under the impression that it will happen for the Wrangler and Unlimited either in the mid '11 Wrangler model year or for the '12 model year. Personally, I'm still hopeful that we'll get a 4 Cyl Diesel option too.

B.S. I would like to have a diesel as well... If the J8 gets adopted by the military I think that it's a good possibility it'll cross over to the civilian market... at least that's what i'm hoping

Uh, the J8 has been "adopted" by the military, not the US Military however.

draggo, other countries have armed forces???
If I was issued one I might have stayed in longer!!!!

Seriously though I meant the US. Picking one up cheap at a surplus auction would be awesome!
