Default Should I buy a '12?

I currently own a 2008 4dr. sport with 49,000 miles. See my signature for the current set up. I'm currently getting somewhere between 12-13MPG.

With the new motor and some of the projected MPG, I could potentially be looking at saving almost $100 per month on gas by purchasing a new Jeep.

I have a couple questions/concerns. Does the hard top from the '08 fit a '12? That could save me quite a bit on the new purchase by using my existing hard top, and not buying a new one. I have a set of LoD sliders and a Gobi Stealth rack. Will those fit on a '12?

I drove a '12 sport today with the 3.21 gears. I was really impressed with the way the motor responded. They didn't have one on the lot with the 3.73 gears. I wouldn't buy one with the 3.21 because we do wheel a bit. I live in an area with a decent number of hills and the '08 is constantly searching for the proper shift points. I know that the '12 only had the stock set up on it.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks.

My 2012 uses the same mounting points as a 2007 top. The front latch is offset to the drivers side. I don't know how the 2008 top is built. There were a few years when the front latch was in the middle.

Well the 3.6 and W5A580 5-speed automatic alone is worth the upgrade....

Not sure you are aware that's the same transmission used in the 2006-10 Jeep SRT8 and Mercedes E55 AMG...

So I would focus on the what will you have in 5 years if you don't upgrade ... an old Jeep with 100K miles that cost you $6,000 more to just run it up and down the street... not to mention the ongoing maintenance. The depreciation will be a killer because there will be used 2012's on the lot with 50K miles on them.

Don't do what I did an hold on to an aging Jeep too long ... unless of course its an older classic like a CJ or Bronco.

Do the math 5 years out and it will make the decision for you. Calculate NPV and make sure you include all your costs...

Good luck.

I agree with the previous post. I traded up and have been very happy. The 12 is so different in several ways.

I have seen a few posts that say the 07-10 tops fit on an 11 & 12's The front latch is slightly different but should work.

Funny how the trade-up worked for me. I traded a 4.5 year old 07 JKU for a brand new one. With all the equity I had in the 07 my monthly payment is $7 less and 1 year less payments. Soooo..I have a new Jeep with a great engine/trans combo, a warranty, better mileage (17+ so far), and costs me $7 less and 12 less payments.

Are you sure the SRT8 uses that tranny? I know the V6 Grand Cherokees use it and the 4.7L GCs use the 545RFE. I assumed the 5.7 used the 545 RFE like it does in a Ram 1500.

I think so ... not to mention I own a 2010 Jeep SRT8. I know I have that trans....

I was a little surprised to see the 2012 JKU come with this transmission ... I found a spec sheet somewhere on the 2012 JKU to confirm. I'll try to find it again, but it was stated in a spec sheet that it was the same German trans.

IDK ... maybe I misread something along the way.

If your going to buy a 12, step up and buy the RUBICON. The power with the 4.10 is better and the mileage is about the same. The ride and the handling is much better than a X series. Resale down the road is much better also.
