What would Jeepers Do?
Here is the situation...
I have narrowed down my JK options to 3 choices
Choice 1- Steel Blue X with everything I want except it doesn't have side airbags. Would have to be shipped 400 miles.
Choice 2- Order a Jeep Green with everything I want.
Choice 3- Steel Blue Rubicon with everything I want.
Steel Blue is my color of choice and I originally wanted an X, but I am worried about the no airbag thing. I have a wife and kid so all of the sudden safety is a concern.
The Rubicon would make my payments really high, close to a $100 more a month I am not sure I can convince my wife. I don't do crazy off roading/ rock crawling (I might, who knows?) I mostly do mellow, but fun stuff like trails in Baja, and back country wilderness sort of things and this is my D.D. $5000 is a lot for airbags, but piece of mind is priceless.
I love Jeep Green and the thought of ordering my Jeep, anticipating it's arrival, and seeing the Built for Sully sticker is super cool and intriguing. It's just not Steel Blue.
My head hurts from the deliberating, second guessing, and stressing over this addition to my family that I intend to have until it falls apart.
What do you kids think?
I am so ready to have the jeep in my driveway and stop posting about this shit and move on to posting about mods I want to make.
I am sure you are ready for that as well

Don't you mean $500 for airbags?
$5000 WOULD be way too much, but if you really want them, then $500 (actually, $490, I think) shouldn't stop you.
FWIW, I am in the same situation almost. I am going to order whatever I get, but I opted for the Rubicon. Straight "outta the box" the most capable vehicle you can buy.
Plenty of room for mods, but you could wheel it stock forever and be happy with it... I think.

I think youve asked the wrong question....
WWCND?
What would Chuck Norris do?
Airbags...Chuck Norris doesn't need airbags to protect him from cars...cars need airbags to protect them from Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris doesn't even have a chin under his beard...just another fist.
When the boogeyman goes to bed at night, he checks in his closet for Chuck Norris.
FYI - Actually the airbags don't do anything for the kids if that's why you want them. The side airbags deploy forward only for the driver and front row passenger. I was interested in them until the dealer assured me they're only for the front row.
Now that I think about it, the dealers have a tendency to not know much about their own products...

I would get the Rubicon, this way you won't be tempted as much to mod it. If monthly payment are an issue and a $100 does make a big difference, then I would get the green that has everything you want. I am a bit like you, I like having the side airbag, especially since the jeep's biggest weakness is the side (since it doesn't have reinforced doors...). I might not make much of a difference for your kids but it will for you and your wife.
The Rubicon comes with rock rails, which I think add some added side protection. There is a guy on here who posted a picture of his Rubicon that had been T-boned, and it looked like it held up pretty well.
