Default JK-Forum at King of the Hammers - 2016

The King of the Hammers is an off-road race that combines desert racing and rock crawling. This race is held in February on Means Dry Lake at Johnson Valley, California. This annual event is a mix of gnarly off-road racing where the attrition rate is so high often just 10-20% of the racers finish due to the extreme terrain that includes high speed sections of open desert where speeds of 130mph can be seen, to near vertical rocky obstacles challenge the best rock-crawlers to get over quickly. Carnage is a norm with broken motors, suspension, axles, or entire vehicles.

This year the JK-Forum group showed up with a large group ready to camp, explore, spectate and assist with the fun. We hooked up with 4-Wheel to Heal warriors and offered our Jeeps as "limos" to take them to some of the best spots to catch the racing action. We held our first ever, and soon to be an annual event; the Extreme Barbie Jeep Race where we had a friendly competition with our buddies over at Jeep Asylum. The Jeep Asylum racers showed up with the kilts on ready to race, and we had our own "Captain America". The Marine warriors even jumped into the racing action when their officer volunteered to have them all race one BIG race on the bigger hill. Carnage, tumbling, broken wheels and axles, and photo-ops galore.

The KOH racing action was exciting with some cool passing on Chocolate Thunder and other gnarly hills. Some of us topped of the weekend with a special "King of the Hammers Experience" on the Saturday following the main race, where the famous racer Tony Pellegrino took us on an excursion through parts of the actual race-track and offered a wealth of his experience and stories about what this race is all about. Pretty impressive to have Tony there with us, especially after his severe wreck on Friday where he was flying at 80mph across the desert when his front suspension broke sending his vehicle into a multi-roll and tumble! Once his vehicle came to rest on its side, the competitor behind came rolling in and ran into his roof! Luckily, no major injuries, and Tony was able to hang with us on Saturday!

Below are some highlights from this years action, and you can see all 600+ of these great images by following the link to my tomslik.com where you can shop and buy photos, prints, or keepsakes:
