ok fellas i know you can mount a 12.50 tire on a 7 inch rim, and i know of the bad tread wear and all the other things why i shouldn t. BUT i am going with 35x12.50R16 nitto mud grapplers and i want to use a set of brand new 16x7 rims that i can get dirt cheap. is it worth it, will i cause any undue problems by going that way. i don t see any reason not other then the reccomended rim width is 8.5 inches. let me know what you guys think. thanks

Hey man, I know TEEJ has mentioned many times that he has run 12.50's on a 7 inch rim without any problems. Its a poor man's bead lock Hopefully he will chime in or you might want to PM him.
Im running a 35x12.5 Toyo MT on an 8 " rim without any problems. I think the true width of it is actually 13.4
I pretty sure my brother is running 13.50 swampers on 8" rims.. I'll have to check with him. Although his is basically a dedicated trail rig.

I had 305/70 R16's on 7" rims on my Silverado untill my first wheeling trip. I blew beads constantly. The tire would just fold under when the truck was flexed up. Went to 10's and all was great. I run 8's with my jeep with the same size tire.

OK, I'm back.
Yeah - I have ~ 80 K miles on 33x12.5's on 7" rims...no abnormal wear, no blown bead problems, no problems what so ever.
That's with BFG AT ko's.
I have friends with the same set-up.
If you air down a tire too low, that doesn't need really low psi to wrap rocks, you can blow beads...its tire dependant, not rim dependant per se.
People with too wide a rim blow beads all the time, as the tire fold over off camber, or hitting a rock, knocks it off the bead....so most off roaders run a narrower rim than street guys.
For example, we run the competition courses you see with typically 12.5 - 13.5"-ish tires on ~ 8" rims.
If the tires are stiff sidewalled, so that you HAVE to air way down to get rock wrap...well, then we use bead locks.

alright thanks guys. i just wanted to make sure. i m not going to pull the trigger on new wheels and tires (since i already have 17's and i m stepping down to 16's) and this not be a good long term idea.
wear i m not worried about. i m a tire tech to begin with and i rotate and rebalance my tires every 3000 miles with my oil change

It CAN round the bottom of the tread contour if too high a psi is used, but that can happen on a wide rime too, etc...but a narrower rim is more sensitive to it.
In short, its a perfectly reasonable solution.
