That sounds like the perfect combination!

So 5.5" back spacing with 8" rims should put the outside edge of the tire close to the outside of the fender and prevent the mud splashing all along the side of the Jeep and the tire contacting the fender lower lip. Compared to my setup with 4.5" backspacing and 9" rims which puts the outside edge of the tire about 2" beyond the fender.
But then you have to take it further and get into the actual specs on the rim and tire. Using the same stated size on the tire sidewall, there could be an inch or more difference in the actual measured height and width between mfg's. For rims, backspace is easier to understand so it gets used more often. But there is also offset, which I think is basically where in that 8" or 9" width the rim actually mounts to the hub. How far toward the center vs how far out toward one side or the other. Makes my head hurt...

Yeah, a pic is easier to understand.

I like your idea of 8.5" wheels (or even 8") with 5" back spacing. I don't do severe articulation but haven't had any rubbing issues. I don't like the tires sticking out about 2" beyond the flares. Don't like the look. Don't like the dirt slinging all over the side of the Jeep when I hit a puddle or dirt from a dirt road after the rain.
What kind of rear bumper is that and how do you like it? I'm in the market for one due to going with larger tires in the near future.

They are ARB front and rear bumpers and ARB rear swinging tire carrier that attaches to and opens with the tailgate. I love the bumpers, but if I had it to do over again I'd use a Teraflex HD hinged tire carrier instead. They've been using the Teraflex HD on many JK's with 40" spares at the shop that did mine! My ARB tire carrier works fine, but just more complication than I needed.
