Default Newbiie with a tire/wheel question

I bought a 2014 sport with stock 16" steel wheels and 225/75R16 tires. My intention is to eventually upgrade the tires/wheels. I don't go off-road but I like the look of matte black wheels and a beefier tire. I can't afford to spend a lot at this point. I have a friend that bought a JK a few months ago and as part of the deal, the dealership upgraded his JK with Rubicon wheels/tires. So, he has the original cast aluminum 17 inch wheels with 255/75R17 tires that he is looking to sell. The set is brand new, they literally have 10 miles on them.

I am trying to decide whether to buy his set. I am guessing that would raise the Jeep a couple of inches due to the larger tire and they'd be a little wider - just not sure if they'd adequately fill up the wheel well. Also, I would want to paint/plasti-dip/bedline/powdercoat the aluminum rims black. Do the aluminum rims look good painted?

So, he is asking $600 for the brand new set (5 tires/wheels). Is that a good deal? Do you think the upgraded tires/wheels would improve the look of the Jeep significantly? Also, how well does paint/etc. adhere to the aluminum rims? Is there any market for stock 16 tires/rims with less than 1000 miles on them? On the other hand, should I just wait, save up some money and buy 33s with black rims?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Oh man, you're giving me anxiety! Lol.

The stock 17s look a lot better than the wheels you have (you could just drive to your dealership and see what they look like since that is what most Jeeps come with...). With no lift, I think they look just fine. I know lots of people have painted them black and it works well. I'm sure there are some threads on here of how to do it.

Your wheels aren't worth much. Maybe you could get $200? $600 for your friends setup isn't a bad deal.

If it were me, I'd get those for now. You should be able to sell them down the road for about the same price if you decide to upgrade again. So, no loss and you don't have to wait.

You could sell those 16" wheels. I sold mine on Craigslist. Just keep a set of stockers if you plan on getting bigger tires so you can swap them out for inspection time. Lol

Your friend's tire package is a GREAT DEAL !!!!
Just be sure that the TPMS comes with it. Otherwise you'll be shelling out some $$ for TPMS install, plus rebalancing all the tires.

The stock 16" setup on the JK isn't all that bad looking....it's just that the 17" setup looks better. However, I feel that the stock 16" tires ride better than the larger ones.

I changed out my stockers the week I bought my JK. Looks great!

I bought my '11 with the base wheel/tire package. I didn't mind the wheels but the puny tires had to go. Originally planned on getting some more aggressive 16 inch tires but ran across a deal on the 17" Moabs that I couldn't turn down. Night and Day difference in looks. I went with a 265 70 17 which is very close to the 255 75 17 but I did go with a more aggressive tire. I'd say go for it...I love the Moabs and they'll look good painted. You'll also be able to go to a larger tire with ease...they are 7.5 wide compared to 7 on the 16" wheel.

If it were me. I would not buy a set of wheels with the intent of replacing them. Save your bucks. 600 is almost 4 wheels depending on what you get. Vi know the trend is bigger wheels. I like 16s. 33s will look great on 16s and will appear larger to the eye. More side wall. Here's a set of 35s on 16s.
