Default How I fixed my soft top leak

I no longer have my soft top on my Jeep, but I noticed alot of people are having trouble with water leaks. Mine was leaking above the doors and dripping onto the upper door handle. I took mine to the dealer 3 times for this concern and got my doors adjusted and a new header seal. Nothing fixed it. I decided to fix it myself. The first thing I did was add a piece of weatherstripping between where the door frame is supposed to seal against the header. I apologize that I don't have a picture of this, but I removed all the factory foam from the door frame and cleaned the door frame with finger nail polish remover and attatched a chunk of 2" weatherstripping to the surface. It's not exactly shaped like a rectangle, so I cut the extra weatherstripping off with a razor blade. The following picture is where another member sealed this area with silicone to give you an idea of the area I'm talking about.........

After I did this, my leak onto the door handle was no longer there, but it started leaking from the center of the soft top and right onto my shifter and radio. Basically the problem with the soft top is that it doesn't fit tight enough against the header seal and allows water to get past the front part and then the water goes into the header channel(white arrow in picture).

Once it gets past the header channel, instead of draining outside the doors, it leaks between the door frame and the header seal into the Jeep. Since I sealed up this area with the weatherstripping, it was now building up in the channel in the header seal and overflowing into my interior. So I figured the best way to fix this was to seal the area between where the soft top meets the header seal and prevent water from getting in there in the first place. I took some more 2" weatherstripping
(1 1/4" fits better, but 2" is all I had), and after prepping the front area of the soft top that seals against the header channel with rubbing alcohol, I used some 3M weatherstrip adhesive(use the stuff in the spray can not the stuff in the tube. They sell this at the Wal-Mart here in town), and removing the coating for the sticky surface on the weatherstripping, I sprayed the 3M adhesive onto the back of the seal and let it set up about 2 minutes or so, then attatched it to the soft top and let dry for at least 20 minutes. After that, I cut the excess off with a razor blade(again, shouldn't have to do this with 1 1/4" weatherstripping), then I attatched the top back onto the windshield and secured it using the factory clamps. Let it dry for at least a good hour before retracting the top again. Leak is now gone and the top is also alot quieter! My soft top is in storage right now so I couldn't get these pictures with it on my Jeep but this is the best I could do.....

Hopefully this will help anyone out with this leak because it drove me f-in nuts until I fixed it!

I thought I was ontop of things when I put an extra strip of weather stripping along the front of my soft top as well. I bought it at Home Depot. It worked great for wind noise, but one day with my top back and the glue melted in the sun.

I have a 2010 JKU, my leak is no real big deal. It leaks somewhere on the passenger side, but it is not a drip and you don't even know it leaks unless you feel the front passenger carpet. it comes in and leaks somewhere down the frame to the floor board. My fix was pull drain plugs and go topless and doorless and let the carpet air dry. I have just accept the fact that it is a Jeep. I also plan on rhino linning my foor boards. That will take care of any possible rust issues.
