Check the terminal connectors for corrosion. I had lights, winch, etc. attached to mine and it corroded up so badly it ate up the battery connector on positive side. I replaced withe the heavy duty ones from quadratec and sprayed withe red battery corrosion protector spray then voila problem solved.

I'm betting it's a battery though.

Have you done any troubleshooting with a multi-meter?
Check the battery voltage at rest, then check the voltage when the ignition is placed to ON and then have someone try to start the engine and see what the voltage drops to.
If you can get the vehicle jump started; verify the voltage at the charging stud on the back of the alternator and at the battery.
At rest the voltage should be 12.5-13.0 and running the voltage should be 13.8-14.8.
If the voltages are lower; either the battery or alternator are usually at fault.
Also check the battery cables for white powdery buildup; they will need to be cleaned or replaced.

Your particular problem i had with mine as well and my co-worker had it as well. The reason yours starts in neutral it because the transmission position sensor gets worn or dirty and develops a bad ground. With a bad ground, the computer thinks you are trying to start the jeep in drive, so it wont start. The only way to fix the sensor ground is to go into the tranny and replace or clean the contacts. The remedy is to run a 10 or 12 gauge ground wire from the neg battery terminal to the black bracket that bolts to the top of your alternator. I added a second one from the neg terminal to the tranny housing. This fix grounds the tranny better and fixes the problem. try it, it works great!

^^^ I'm with badkarma. Start with the cheap and easy thing before dropping $$$ on a battery. I added a ground to my jk that was giving me the clicking every time I tried to start up, and now it fires up like it should.

Yep, I have the same problem here... I get a clicking noise as if the starter is getting power but its not turning over the engine. I had this problem six months ago and the only way to get her going was to shift it into neutral. Well it's back! It Clicks 90% of the time in park so I just automatically shift it to neutral because I'm afraid I'm going to wear out the starter. I'll Try running a wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the black bracket on the alternator to see what I get. Stay tuned

Happened to me last night.
Took the Wife out to dinner and had it valet parked, sat down and the valet dude comes and says he cannot get the headlights off (RHD).
So I go and cut them off and notice that the interior lights won't turn off automatically. So I check and he has also got them turned on, I guess from trying to turn the headlights off (idiot). So then I try and start her and just get lights on the dash and a click. Tried a few times with no luck. Cancelled dinner and called a wrecker. When I got her home she started up like nothing happened ????

Ive been searching the net and it seems that I may have the infamous Jeep Flu?

BTW I did try bumping the gearshift and putting her in neutral, (automatic) with no luck.

One of the articles says it may be the CSM module? What is a CSM Module ? I have searched with no luck.
I think the battery in the FOB was dying so I changed it.
I guess I will have to see if it does it again.

Also, I think the valet dude must have tried doing everything possible to try and get the headlights off, does the comp have some sort of time out?

Thanks.

Default Clicking but wont turn over

I have an 08 jku. I've been dealing with the damn starting/clicking issue for a year now. From pushing and pulling on my shifter to get it to start, my shifters all worn out. I already took the transmission apart. Replaced the gear position sensor (which sucked) it was good for the first day or 2 and it went right back to clicking 90% of the time. I've talked to tech guys at jeep dealers. Knowbody knows what it is or has even heard of the problem. I will do anything for the problem to go away. I dont even drive my jeep anymore because it is so annoying
