My auto shifter mod
My shifter modification. thanks' to Landerley for the inspiration.
I couldn't stand the feel of the cheap plastic factory shifter any more so i bought me an old school HURST T-handle with the intension of using a GENNIE SHIFTER knob adapter. well it seems GENNIE is out of business and no one has an adapter in stock. so off to HOME DEPOT i go. What i came up with is the parts below.
1/2" x 8" galvanized pipe
1/2 to 3/8 coupler
3/8" x 2" pipe
5/16" lock washer
4mm washer
4mm x 6mm pan head screw
blue lock- tight
spring kit
5 U.S. Dimes
to remove factory handle, pry the sleeve off the bottom of your shifter. slide it down to the console. remove 4 mm set screw and pull up on t-handle.
now with the new supply's Cut the 1/2" x 8" pipe to 4" leaving threads on one end. connect the 3/8" pipe to the 3/8" end of the coupler, place 5 U.S. Dimes in the bell of the coupler as a spring stop, and then screw the 1/2" pipe onto the 1/2" end of the coupler capturing the dimes. get every thing as tight as you can and then place the shifter knob on the pipe slide the whole assembly on the stock shifter rod and get the angle that you want ,if it is a t -handle. now pull up on the handle to expose the set screw hole and mark on the pipe with a sharpie where you will make the slot. remove t-handle. then on the end with no threads cut a slot about 3/8 up from the bottom that is just wider than 4 mm and 7/8" long. degrease and spray with bed liner. put 5/16" lock washer on the push rod coming up true the center of the stock shifter install spring from spring kit on top of the washer and slide shifter assembly onto stock shifter. push down to expose factory 4mm set screw hole and install set screw with 4mm washer. make sure to put lock-tight on screw. now screw the 4mm screw in just far enough to allow the shifter to move up and down, the loc-tight will hold it in place when it dries. Now your JEEP is HURST equipped. Enjoy.

Very cool writeup. I have a skull shift knob I want to put on that isn't even taped yet. Any idea how I can do that and then do your little trick to make it all work? This is the knob I'm doing...... once painted and taped....
