I have an idea to make the cuts look even cleaner: Get some door edge guards
cut them at 45 degree angles and install on cuts made to fit roller fairlead
It would look something like this:

Rubicon?
Anyone able to find a reasonable winch to install like this on a Rubicon?
...or is the space already toast (I know someone suggested it might be...)

Smitty Bilt just started shipping their 8000lbs XRC8 winch for $299 or you can get the Chicago Electic winch for $399 at Harbor Frieght. I haven't found anyone who is using either winch. So I don't know how well they would work. Both of them look like Mile-markers.

Alright, I've found almost the same tool that I used to hold nuts inside the frame through factory holes (mine is a 8"and just fit) don't know if a 10" will fit. Look at

Great Idea!
Love that spot for the winch! Can't wait for the wife to get home to see if there is room on the rubi. Then I will have to find spot for plates cuz you have to have them on the front here in Wis.

winch mount
I did this to my jk last weekend. Thanks for the great write up. I used a sawsall to cut my winch channel and your hacksaw blade idea for the plastic bumper. My only concern now is if the cable is pulling from a extreme angle if the bolts that hold the fairleed on will bend or break? Time will tell.

if you really wanted to get tricky with this and you have to run a front plate, rig something up to allow the license plate to flip up or down to reveal a hidden winch

Before put my beer down and go crawling around with the tape measure has anyone checked if this mod will work with the rubi's swaybar disconnect?

i've been wondering about that myself... once my winch from harbor frieght arives with the plate, i'm going to do a dry fit. something tells me that its either going to be too close for comfort, or not at all...
