I'd hope the drivetrain would be designed so if the electric motors broke, it wouldn't prevent the standard power from kicking in. But you're right, this is a very real concern.

FWIW, I don't know that this is targeting those that would be in the middle of nowhere. Also, it's a mild hybrid... so it's still a turbo 4 cylinder if you don't have the e-torque working... same I idea as what's in some of the RAM trucks now. Heck, it's rated at 24 mpg combined, so if you want the jeep for the doors/top off feeling but don't plan on being in the middle of nowhere, this is probably a great choice.
