Moab Overland 2013
Ten days, 463 off-road miles--what more can I say? It's all in the videos, which run a total of about 52 minutes.
Part 1 (Ridgeway, CO to Murphy on White Rim Trail in Canyonlands NP) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__eRvYZ9TXY Part 2 (Murphy to Caineville, UT) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONdI-G_jJNQ Part 3 (Caineville, UT to Batty Caves in Grand Staircase-Escalante) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jniv5p3xlK0 Part 4 (Batty Caves to Lake Powell) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7K_T4zUaSY If you're really interested in immersing yourself in our adventure, there are eight "dailies" YouTube videos on my channel, too. These are just the videos I shot, pared down somewhat, but not as much as in the five main videos I've linked below--no music, no still images, no voiceovers. I think they get boring after a couple hours, but they are there if you're interested. |
Part 5 (Lake Powell to Grand Canyon north rim)

If anyone is interested in the .gpx files with our route as recorded by Backcountry Navigator Pro, PM me an e-mail address and I will send it to you. You can drop that into Google Earth to view the route, or most any decent GPS will let you set it up as a route to follow--I'd recommend you not bother with this unless you have topo maps on your GPS. If you're running an Android Phone, Backcountry Navigator is available as a free download. But, I don't know if the free version allows import/export of .gpx files. |
Phenomenal endeavor. Thank you very much for sharing!
When and where is your next overland adventure? If you have room for another Jeep, I'd enjoy tagging along at some point in the future. |
What a great trip! Thanks for sharing your terrific videos, inspires me to start planning an adventure like that!

Anyone who's interested in the trails, two of them are in Wells' "Moab Backroads and 4WD Guide". Those would be Gateway-to-Moab and White Rim Trail. The rest was put together by the fellow driving the Xterra, primarily using the "Utah Gazeteer". We also were carrying some of the NatGeo Trails Illustrated maps. These are excellent quality maps--I know we had them for Canyonlands, Moab South and Grand Canyon East. There were others, too, but I didn't pay that close attention. Finally, I personally use Backcountry Navigator Pro running on my Nexus 7. I downloaded the area maps in advance, and added waypoints primarily to identify landmarks along our route.
