x2 on Well's book. also get the gps micro chip. The book got us off Golden Spike at night in the pitch dark. We wished we would have had the gps chip tho.

What's the GPS micro chip? I've wanted to get the GPS set up for my iPad... Is that the same thing?

Those FunTrek guides are about all you could need in any area you're heading. I've got both the Moab and Colorado books and they are worth their weight in gold if heading someplace you've never been IMO. I find them to be very accurate with time. I'm usually on the very low end of their time range, but I move a bit expeditiously when not bogged down by a group. I do think that sometimes the ratings are a bit conservative, but I try to keep in mind some folks have very little experience.

If I know I'm heading to a new trail I've never hit, I try to scour the YouTube videos as well just so I know what to expect. Sometimes I'm running solo so it helps to see how others have moved through an obstacle, or what might lie ahead.
