I live in CO, have 4:10 and they suck bad. When I go up mountain passes the Jeep stays in second (auto) just to maintain 55-60 MPH I do not intend to go higher than 33's, but I am looking to get at least 4:56 maybe 4:88 when I get lockers.

Do you have 33's now? If so the 4.56 would probably be perfect. When in Colorado my JK did ok in the mountains as long as I disabled the OD, seemed to hold 3rd fine with speed of traffic (stock 32's and 4.10 gears).

x2 to disabling OD when hill climbing. I do it often.

I have 32's now and the OD was off. I am talking about hill like interstate 70 coming from Breckenridge to Denver or Vail pass. Those kill the Jeep.

Yeah that can be rough, my JK did I-70 over The Rockies better than my TJ did so I guess I was happy about that.

well is it the 1) gas/power problem, or is it a 2) ride comfort problem?

1) you can change the gears for more power, change the exhaust and intake for better fuel economy and a little more power.

2) other than shocks you should have known when you bought a Jeep it was gonna be a rough ride.

Gears would be good when towing. I'd be inclined to add a big tranny if you have the auto tranny. They tend to overheat if stressed.
