You will save a lot of money keeping your factory axle. But the D60 is stronger.

You put 40" tires on a 44 and it will break and put the same tire on a 60 and it will last.

The housing on a dana 60 is not the same as a 44. The tubes are usually 1/2 thick on dana 60's also the brackets are usually 1/4"

I've wondered if the tubes are thicker in the rear D44 than the front. I think somebody verified that the front ones are 1/4" wall but I'm not sure about the rear.

They are larger diameter, but I'm not sure about thickness.

Superior axel shaft D44 35 splines are the same thickness as D60?
I know that the D60 housing/ring and pinion are stronger
