Default Artec Axle truss install help!

I have most of the welding done on my Artec axle truss and am getting ready to tackle attaching it to the cast housing. I know I have to heat is up, but anyone have any tips? I am by no means an expert at welding. Currently the oil is drained but my gears and seal are still in. I have taken it slow so far and kept it cool enough not to damage the seals.

I know that you are doing it to save money and it's cool to work on our own rigs too, but if I were you, I'd find a local welding shop who has experience in welding on cast material and get their tip on the best method. It does take finesse but in the long run, it can be done 'with' proper knowledge. I've welded on a lot of different material but never cast. I'd be apprehensive to do it without some instruction. If money is not the issue, I might take it in to a shop and have it finished. You'd hate to have it not bond correctly or crack at the welds. Best of luck either way.

Not in any way a welder, but have spoke to a few pros on the topic. Cast Steel is not cast iron. Welding should be as easy as what you have been doing.

Again, sure someone on the site can give way more input, but make sure you say it is cast steel when asking.

I just got a message back from Artec and they too told me not to stress. They also reminded me it was not cast iron but cast steel. They said they recommend the heating up to 400 degrees to be safe, but they have also done installs without doing anything. I like most love to work on my own stuff when I can and no I cannot afford to have a shop do it. Which is why I am building a D30 not buying something bigger. Well....I will finish my research and get it ready and go for it in the next few days!

Just to firm it up, the knuckles are cast steel, not cast iron? Correct?

The knuckles are cast iron. The inner-C's are forged steel.

Now I am confused. I thought it was all cast steel.
