You're not welding to the knuckles...you're welding to the inner C's which are cast steel. The knuckles (which are the steering part of the axle) are cast iron.

No they are not cast steel.
The inner-C's are FORGED steel.

Make sure you get a welding blanket to insulate the housing so that it cools down slow. I wrapped mine with a welding blanket and then an old throw away blanket I had. The welding is smple, the preheat and cool down are what are important.

Did you have your gears and seals still in the housing?
