Bead lock wheels .. Pics and thoughts
Are there any disadvantages of running bead locks? My understanding is that they may be illegal in some states, but regardless how is the street ride? I currently have KMC 18" Monsters on my rig, and while I like the look, I don't like all the plastic parts. Looking to trade for a better off road wheel.
One disadvantage is that they are usually high as giraffe nuts. I dont think the on road legality is much of an issue, not to me anyway. Driving on the street with my bead locks is just like driving on any other wheel. This is what i have.....

I'm running the Walker Evans Beadlocks. The only disadvantage I can see is that there is some maintenance to them. You need to check the torque on the bolts regularly and it's recommended that the bolts be replaced periodically. It's really not a big deal to pull out the torque wrench and check the torque once in a while.

Powder coating the wheels black would look sick on your ride. Did the walker evans come with a clear coat? If not, how are they holding up? Seeing that you probably get a little more snow than we do in the Ohio valley, have you had any issues with the wheels during the winter weather?
Thanks.
I am really debating what to do come winter.
Do I powder coat them black?
Do I remove the wheels and run the 37" KM2s on 17x8 Cragar Soft 8s from November to March?
Do I buy a more ice/snow friendly 37" tire and run them on steelies (Cragar Soft 8s) from November to March (separate set of wheels & tires)?
Or do I paint the rock rash on the rings and smother Walker Evans wheels with Mother's wax/polish, and the count on not being too lazy to regularly powerwash off the winter salt/sand/chemicals every time there is a major snow/ice week during the winter?
I haven't yet decided.

I've got a suggestion, white, with black beadlock rings.
Anyway, here are the Hutchinson beadlocks I have, no complaints about them at all, but they are expensive.
They have the advantage of needing little maintenance as the bolts are to be checked every 5K miles and are torqued to 80 ft-lbs so not much chance of them coming loose. They are also a dual beadlock design, securing both sides of the tire, but there is no rock ring to absorb abuse.
I assembled them with the Toyo 35" tires in the garage, they are smooth as silk at an 80 mph cruise, even though they have never been on a balance machine.
hello jkampinga,
Have you consider internal beadlock?
This is an option I'm really considering.
I do have to make some research to see if it is really that great.
You can read a little about it there...
