Question Changed my Differential fluids....

and im glad i did. the rear looked like mud and the front was just about as bad

my concern is this... the rear took just over two quarts. the front took just under one. in reading the write up, it looked like i was going to need 1 1/2 (roughly)

any ideas what could cause this? did i not drain enough, should i have removed the diff cover, jacked up the back end?

I had the same thing happen to me when I decided to change my fluids. Since it was the first time I had ever done any real maintenance I was a little nervous that I had done something wrong. But after posting here, everyone pretty much said I was fine as long as you filled the fluid to where it was coming out of the fill hole. Your jeep probably wasn't on level ground or just didn't have enough time to drain out all of the fluid. You should be fine though.

If you don't have Dana 44's, you should have used just about three quarts total for the two diffs. The 44's hold more fluid than the 35 and 30.

Its normal. I believe its the positions of the axle seal differance between the front and the back. Fronts are just outside the pumpkin housing and the rears are near the wheels.

I recommend Mobil 1 75-90W. We use it all of our customer's vehicles. Very good viscosity at low temps too compared to most other synthetics. Don't even mess with dino oil

Will it hurt to run the 75-140 on the front of my sahara? I changed out the trans and the rear with RP, and I want to change the front fluid also. I have 75-140 left over but I am thinking the front calls for 80w-90. Will it hurt running 75-140 in the Dana 30?

Any help here?
