Default Checking differential fluid levels?

Ok, stupid question from a newbie jku garage mechanic. Going to install a Poison Spyder rear differential cover. Seems simple enough though I have a couple of questions.
1-Do I need or want a gasket?
2-How do I check fluid levels since I do not fill the fluid to the filler bolt?

1- skip it and just use a bead of silicone
2- that is one of the downfalls of the cover.. you'd have to guess.. Could measure how high the fluid is with a stick or something and just know that measurement.

I really don't like the idea of having to measure the fluid.. it is easy to measure engine oil but diff oil I'm normally pumping and it could be easy to go over unless I really tested out ahead of time how much stays in the can, etc..

Put the stock cover up against the psc. Take a paint pen and mark the bottom edge of the stocker fill plug on the psc. Take a zip tie, put the bottom edge at the paint pin mark and mark the bottom edge of the psc fill plug location on the zip tie. Put the ziptie in a safe place and you now have a dipstick for checking levels.
