ESP is all out of whack
 

My ESP on my X (sport) cannot be turned off completely and its been a major pain going around turns on the canyon streets here in LA such as Mulholland and Laurel Canyon.

I got my wheels rotated yesterday, and now its even worse. If I go around a turn at even low speeds of 5 and 10 mph, it cuts on and slows my Jeep down. This is very frustrating when Im trying to haul ass to work and the people behind me aren't very happy either. I have a 6spd manual too. Exactly how do I turn this nightmare off? I'm also not about to pay the Jeep stealership any $$$ to turn it off.

Also, why do you think it got more sensitive after rotating the tires around?

ESP has two different off modes. Push the ESP off switch briefly for partial off. Push it for 5-7 seconds for "full" off. You can also do the steering wheel dance to put it in that full off mode and have it stay off. I'll let you search for that. Full off doesn't quite turn off everything. The ABS brakes still work, for example.

thanks, i posted a thread here before but I guess I got the wrong info as a response. I was told that you cant cut it off unless the Jeep dealership does it with the computer.

Question, what is slowing down my Jeep when the ESP cuts on? is it the brakes or is it the transmission?

The Jeep thinks you're in a skid and is compensating with the brakes. Is your steering wheel perfectly straight when driving straight?

It is possible that something has changed in later years. But give that a try and see what happens. However, you should fix whatever is causing the problem.

I did notice that the steering was off. It can be hard to tell on the crappy streets of LA though but I'll test it out more today. How would all of this get out of whack so bad by just changing the tires around? I kinda panicked when the guy fixing my car could not even drive it into the garage because he couldnt even drive a stick. LA locals. :doh:

I'm thinking it is just a coincidence. You need to straighten your steering wheel. It is an easy, ten minute job. Again, I'll let you search that.

Even the steering wheel 5-10 degrees off can cause the ESP to kick in. It happens a lot after off roading. Simply rotating tires shouldn't affect the draglink, but maybe the turnbuckle was loose? Grab a 15mm wrench and straighten the wheel as dead center as you can. If it still happens, you've got a bigger issue. You can also try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes to reset the system.

After offroading, and my steering wheel being pointed 90 degrees to the right, it would do the same thing. However after about 5 miles of driving it turned the system off. Looked up how to straighten the steering and did it.. It takes a minute once you know how to do it.

dam theres a lot of probs with my Jeep and I really didnt need for this to happen. I need a new starter chip in the steering wheel, a new waterpump, and the gas cap alert light is always on.

And I need a hard top .... when does it end?
