Default Front driveshaft removal

OK I have a purely hypothetical questions. With gas prices going higher would it be possible to remove the front drive shaft and drive around without it sorta like having a 2wd.... would this lead to better mpg? Just a thought that popped into my head while sleeping hahaha

You could do it by simply unbolting it and removing it, but I don't think you would see any measurable gains. You would still be turning the axle shafts and differential.

The gains would be minimal at best and I hardly think it would be worth all the effort. If you've never removed the front shaft, there are these 8 long bolts connecting it to the output shaft that are extremely tedious to pull.

I can speak from experience on this. I've been driving my JK around "neutered" like this for about a month and there's been no difference in fuel economy. Gotta put my JE Reel in some day!

And yes, those bolts WOL referred to are a pain in the ass!

I don't understand how removing the front driveshaft effects the fuel economy of your Jeep. Isn't it 2wd on the road and then you just shift it in 4wd when off-roading That's what I always thought. Someone enlighten me on this.

but everyone who puts manual hubs on their jeeps swear that they get better gas mileage - the companies that sell them use this as one of their advertising points

Disconnecting hubs stop the differential from turning since the axles no longer turn with the wheels
