Who makes a good replacement gas cap ?

 

You can get a locking one that keys to your ignition key from Mopar, works great.

 

I have one and agree, nice to only need one key, I have a Mopar hood lock keyed to the ignition as well.

 

If you don't want to spend that much, Autozone has them at a great price and you can get them keyed as well.

 

I have the Drake Billet Fuel Cap. It's locking and looks great IMO. Works perfect for the last three months I've had it.

 

I would say that is just a fair price considering they would still install it. A mopar gas cap online is $70 according to https://www.moparonlineparts.com/sku/82215184.html. If you are looking for mopar that would be great but if you aren't then that is pricey.

 

You can get it keyed to your ignition key? I had mine from the factory (a $25 upgrade back in 2007), but the plastic retainer broke and I proceeded to lose the cap. Bought a Mopar replacement for $70 or so after tons of searching for a cheaper alternative that would take the ignition key. Cost me $20 at the local locksmith for him to key both it and one for my Gladiator.

I've had someone dump water into my gas tank while I was stopped at a rest stop along I-20 east of Dallas, then wait at the next rest stop ten or twenty miles down the road for me to stop, puzzled why my car wasn't running well. But, I'd seen a young boy walking along with a jug of water as I headed to the bathroom and put two and two together. He was headed in the direction of my car, but there were no other cars parked that far down. And I was further alerted when I saw this same adult at both the exit back onto the Interstate, as well as the entrance for the second rest stop. Figured that was the boy's dad. Friday evening, and bet this fellow knew a local shop that was open late and would "fix" my broken car. Drain all the "bad" gas (which they'd sell to the next "customer"), sell me "new" gas (from last "customer") for an outrageous price. I stopped in Dallas at the first gas station, bought a can of Heet, problem gone in about ten seconds. When I arrived home, I bought a locking gas cap, and have had them on every vehicle since. Ignition keyed is the only way to go; worth every penny to not have to carry an extra several keys.

 

Been using the separate-key version and am tying to cut down the number of keys carried, and recently ordered similar for the JK (68045040AB) from moparwholesaleparts.com . $56 (plus a 5% discount with code TY17), seemed like a bargain. Haven't received it yet, but a source told me a locksmith/dealer is not required -- Just place key in the lock cylinder, put the cylinder in the fuel cap, and turn to the right.

Heard too many stories like Mark's above, some of the jerks I grew up with even bragged about it. Cheap insurance...

Following up on this, the lock cylinder was not the type that key's itself to the first key inserted and turned. 20 minutes and $20 for a locksmith that specializes in automotive and it's done.

 

Almost always it's someone asking who is new to the forum. All forums do encourage folks to search before asking. So, it's just a by-product of that.

I should add that, even though JKF is not very active anymore, it has a wealth of information about the JKs. Probably more so than any other single Jeep forum. It rightfully attracts a lot of temporary visitors for that reason alone.

 

Funny that this thread got revived, I've been getting the gas cap warning again, second time in about 160k miles. Do gas caps only last 80k before they stop sealing properly?
