Gearing?

I Am considering regearing and I am wondering what benefits or loss I would get from it I currently have 32's soon to be 33's. I have 3.73 gears with wrangler x axles. How high could I go. Is it worth changing? I already have a tuner.

You can go to 5.38's, though 5.13's may be a better option for that front d30. With the 1K to 2k price tag, only you can decide if it is worth it --> to you. My opinion, turn OD off and wait until you move up to 35's to regear.

Read through the other gearing thread here on the first page for some more feedback.

The gear chart shows 4.88's for 33" tires with an automatic trans.

On my automatic Rubicon I went with 35’s and geared it at 4.88. It is about 200 more RPM at 60 MPH. almost the stock ratio. If you are going with 33’s you may not want to spend the money for just 1” taller tires. You may pick up some used 4.1 gears, I think they would work great for you.

I have the 3.21s and I'm good with 33s. 35s might not be bad either.

I'm running 33" x 12.5" x 15" on a 2 dr X, with the same auto transmission and same stock 3.73's, and to me, it would not be worth a grand or more to regear. The only performance decreases that I've noticed:
  • It will take a second or two longer to get up to speed on the interstate
  • You may have to turn OD off to pass slower traffic on the highway
  • You'll have slightly longer stops from higher speeds (not that regearing would help that in an auto)
  • You'll have to pay a little more attention to your engine and transmission on the interstate and watch your tach to make sure you're not downshifting out of OD unnecessarily.
that may sound like a lot, but the performance hit is not as bad as some folks make it out to be, at least it wasn't for me. YMMV. Around town, it still feels pretty much like the same jeep, but with a better stance. On the highway is the only place I really feel any performance decrease, and it's minor in my opinion. If I were going to 35"s or 37"s I would definitely regear, but I would also be at least looking at D44's to replace the D30 on the front end.

I guess what I'm saying is if I were going to spend a grand or more on new gears, it would be an appropriate set for 35's or 37's. I wouldn't waste the money just for 33"s. Just my humble opinion.

^^many good comments above.

One thing I don't see very often is the discussion on off road performance with a re-geared rig. When you are geared properly, your 4lo will really work nice for you...even more so if you've got the 4:1 ruby TC.

My 5.38 gears are at the shop now and they should be on in less than two weeks. I know I'm looking forward to the street performance but I'm REALLY looking forward to the off road performance.

My dad has the 4.10s on his rubi and my Jeep has a lot more pep and is a lot quicker than his. He does have better 1st gear "grip" than I do though. His is a unlimited 6sp.

I drove a 2dr 6sp with the 4.10s and it isn't quick like mine, but I'm sure it would hold high way speeds better for sure. I think its all my flashpaq.
