Default Gears chattering ?

I'm hearing a clunking noise that I think is either coming from my axle or my tranny - hard to tell.

The best way to describe it is that awful noise the manual tranny makes if you're close to stalling...like when you're off the clutch and not pressing gas and it goes "clunk clunk" then you press clutch back in and it's fine. I'm getting this noise while driving. Sometimes when slowing down. Usually 1,2nd or 3rd gear

Any ideas?

Here's my set up:
3.5" Aev north degree lift
Stock 3.73 gears
35" mtz tires

I doubt anything else would matter but if u wanna know anything else Let me know

Gears typically make bad noise while under load, and typically at higher gears... Are you hearing this at front or rear?

Does it make this noise while going straight, turning or both?

I'm hearing it from rear and have narrowed it down to being between 2nd and 3rd right before I shift

Sounds similar to a noise I hear in my 2009 jku. I didn't see if you have an auto? Mine makes the clunking sound especially after coasting and then easing onto the gas, like when you exit off the highway. I haven't been able to figure it out yet, but it seems a lot like the problem people have reported about the torque converter.

I hope this helps, I am in no way an expert, but I just happened to see the post and thought I'd add my experience/plans.

If it happens to be your rear diff, have you changed the gear oil yourself? Do you have Trac-Loc?

Reason being, I'm currently in the process of getting gear oil for my '11 Rubicon JKU, and I have Trac-Loc which requires an additive that I'd have to get from the dealership. But I called Royal Purple since it comes with the additive and checked to see if I'd have to get the Mopar additive. They said if I hear any chattering I may need to get it.

I haven't changed my gear oil. Recently I noticed that the breather tube wasn't on. Must have slipped off while wheeling...I placed it back ok as you can see.. Maye this was why?

I hear the same thing dude. Only when I shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Its the clutch, or so I have been told. Sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't. I have tried easing up on the clutch when I shift and it has helped.

Without actually hearing it, it's hard to suggest. I'm kind of leaning to throw out bearing but usually it's heard in take off and 1st to 2nd as well. I highly doubt the clutch before the throw out but anything is possible. I'd check your u-joints throughout prior to dumping any cash into a fix. Some people beat up the driveshaft u-joints pretty bad driving a manual (not pointing fingers). Just climb under the rig and give her a good look over. Also, check you diff fluid
