How I chose my gears.
OK.
after reading around 40+ pages of posts about gears, I have come to this conclusion:
Most people prefer 4.88s for 35s with a stick
However, 35s with 5.13s are hailed by many auto owners, due to the different gearing in the overdrive. (.69 v .84)
almost all 37 owners seem to like 5.13s, unless they have a rubicon and have access to 5.38s, which arent available for lower models.
5.13s have a likelihood to diminish my mileage.
4.88s might not give me the oomph that I want at takeoff.
AND TOO MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT THERE IS ONE RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER FOR EVERYONE....
thus the mean-spirited banter between posters.
Anyway, I have chosen to go with 5.13s, since:
a. My 36s are in between 35s and 37s, so I should benefit more than suffer.
b. I enjoy speeding around town, but am more relaxed on the highway, so I seek low end.
c. I dont really care about the cost of gas....I want to have fun.
d. I only want to do this once....and id kick myself if I went with 4.88s and didnt have enough go.
e. My superchips tuner should help me adjust to compensate for the change, as i can enter my gears and adjust shift points.
Not sure if this is how everyone else chose theirs, but this is me.

Good choice and I think the difference between the 6 speed and the auto is greatly understated. I think that is a large part of how peoples personal experiences differ and why so much debate. The other portion of the debate is derived from the terrain people roll over, weight of their vehicle and the intended use. Again, I think you made a good choice, but I'm sure the debate will rage on.

I think a lot of the debate goes on because most people are use to dealing or hearing about cars and gears, if you hear a old camaro is going to have 5:13's you are like holy ship its not going to have any top end, I wont be able to cruise at highway speeds and thats just not so with the Jeep auto and 5:13's I also dont see if being so with the manual and 4:88. I can drive at 80 no problem, the engine isnt screaming at all, its at about 2700-2800rpm perfect for our 3.8.
Crash I think you made a great choice with the 5:13's you'll probably goto 37's eventually anyhow haha

Yep, totally different in the Camaro and at the drag strip the rule of thumb is under gear and over convert, unless You're bangin gears. The guy with 5.13s at the drag strip better be running near 150 in the 1/8th and 180 in the quarter, just a totally different picture.

My 35's are now 33 1/2's, just got the gears and I tell you, you'll so love them. Crash, I think you've made the right choice, for around town and the awesome crawl you'll get in 4 low. I think maybe the manuel guys are not thing of the crawl you get with 5.13's, especially if your not a Rubicon. IMO if your worried about gas milage, you shouldn't have bought a jeep( this is directed to the gas mongers, I know u don't care), just look at the window sticker, duhhh! Glad your gonna be a part of the 5.13 club, now only if I can get my noise from the ds or Tcase solved, it ain't comin from the gears, they're as smooth as butter.
