How much bumpstop for Teraflex 4" LA?

Here's a pic of front and rear bumpstops on my JKU with Teraflex 4" LA and 37" tires. I have flat fenders and ATX Slab Beadlocks - no issues with rubbing whatsoever at this point and no issues with clearance steering.
I've ordered JKS pucks to adjust my front stops. What heights should I go with? And is that rear bumpstop (lower) needed at all? Thoughts? What are others running with a 4" and flat fenders? Attachment 262644Attachment 262645 edited to add tire height to info |
typically, you want about as much bump stop as you have lift. needless to say, with your 4" lift, you were give bump stop extensions to make up that difference. while bumpstops will help prevent things like rubbing, a more important roll they serve is in helping to prevent the over compression of your coils. in other words, squashing them down to the point that they don't return to full height.

Thanks WOL, I didn't even think of that (prevent over compression). With that info I think what I need to do is leave the rear alone and take about 1" out of the front. Although I'm going to go and take a tape measure to it right now so I have specifics on how much stop I presently have.
Here's the measurements: Stock bumpstops front and rear are 1.5" - call it 1" since it's rubber for compression. With the lift and the standard stops that came with it: Front - Lower Puck: 2.5" Upper: 4.5 - .5 for compression: 4" Total effective front stop: 6.5" Rear - Lower 'Puck': 3" Upper: 4 - .5: 3.5" Total effective rear stop: 6.5" So I've gone from 1" of effective bumpstop to 6.5" of effective bumpstop - which is 1.5" more than the 5" needed to prevent over compression? I think I'll take 1.5" out all the way around. Front will be easy enough with the JKS kit rear is a little more challenging. This seems consistent with how it felt to me on the trail in terms of what my articulation felt like. Seem right? |
