You don't "need" high steer at 3.5", but it helps eliminate a lot of bump steer. I have a 3.5" I've been running for a couple years. I went high steer earlier this year and it did improve the handling, but what I had before was manageable. Once I lifted the track bar on the front to raise my roll center, I had no choice.
