Well this is slightly embarrassing but I just regeared (Yukon 4.88) and I was invited to go wheelin tomorrow

Is this. Bad idea? I have 180km on my new gears. I guess I should avoid water at the least?

Any input would help ...I just wanna wheel tomorrow :(

False. Typically 500 miles is recommended before towing/offroading and also change the fluid after 500 miles.

 

500 miles is what I did and have been told! But ask the shop who installed them for their input..

I'd go easy on the gears for the first 500 miles to keep them from overheating. If it's just easy back roads it may be OK, but I'd error on the safe side if I just spent a wad of dough on new gears. Proper break in goes a long way towards how long the gears will last.

 

Let the gears break in. You want to allow the gear to develop a nice contact pattern before you start to put stress and shock loads on the gear teeth.

Drive them easy on the road for 500 miles and change the fluid. When you drain the fluid you will want to inspect it and make sure you do not see any bearing material or see any big chunks of metal.

 

This trail is mostly mud and small light trails. Some hill climbs but no rock crawling and I will be avoiding the water crossing....

I have 200KM on the gears so far. By the time I get to that spot ill have about 300km on them...

Maybe changing the fluid earlier than 1000km would be a good call?

YES They Do Need To Be Broken In!!!! But heres the thing: How do you break in the front axle if you dont put it in 4WD? So I think the best answer is coming down to you. You CAN take it offroad BUT I would HIGHLY recommend that you take it as easy as you can. Also i'd stay out of the mud and sand. This is so you dont have tire spin and then it catches and shocks the axles...shocks the new gears. All in all, its your coin.

 

Being that most of us don't have the ability to unlock our front hubs, your front gears spinning whenever the wheels are. No 4x4 needed for the breakin to happen
