I noticed that too, but I also noticed that the factory lower ball joint had that same recess, no retainer clip, and no possible way to mount an additional retainer. Keep in mind that the JK shares ball joints with the Grand Cherokee which has IFS. It's possible that the WK's stamped steel lower control arm requires the circle clip, whereas the solid front axle C of the JK does not.
