Im trying to avoid doing damage to the body and paint. There has got to be a proper way to remove the clips. Any bodyshop guy's out there that would have the answer

used a small flat blade screwdriver here as well with no damage. Maybe wear eye protection....I had one go flying about 10' when it came loose.

You could wrap the blade of the screwdriver with a piece of electrical tape to give you a little buffer. Just go slow and use a screwdriver with a thin tip and you should be able to get them off.

IIRC they are spring clips. Remove the tail light and reach through the hole, squeeze the rear of them (i used small pleirs, but you could probably do it with your hand) and they will pop right out. takes longer to take the two retaining screws out of the light than it does to remove the clips.

Thanks for the expo ! I knew somebody had to have removed those damn things before. They popped out slick.
