Locker or LSD
I have front and rear truetracs and they have been awesome. They work all the time and do so seamlessly. With lockers your basically running open diffs until you engage the lockers. I've seen them not work as well because with open diffs you get to a point where you get stuck, it stops you, you lose your forward momentum, then engage lockers and try to get up or out. With truetracs you never lose forward momentum because you don't get stuck as easily in the first place making them a better choice in my opinion.
The Tu- Tracs sounds like they have a much better torque bias than in the past. I used one back in the late 80's and would have to use my brake a lot to keep from losing a wheel. I ended up running two Detoit Lockers and it was the best combination at the time for me. My truck at the time would lift a wheel often compared to these coil spring Jeeps. Tru -Tac sounds like a good solution!
The truetrac bias is listed as 2.5 - 3.5:1
Ran the truetracs/detroits from 2000 until I sold it in 2011. Hadn't heard of any design changes between when you ran them and when I started, but I guess it's possible? When a tire would come up, a little brake pressure was typically enough to get me going again. But I freely admit that I am not big into rocks, and don't lift tires all that often. Disconnects and decent suspension travel usually keeps them on the ground.
Two detroits was great offroad, but at the time I was doing too much driving up I-70 into snow and ice, and a front autolocker was just a bit too squirrely for me. Front truetrac/rear detroit was much better on winter roads, and I didn't notice any difference offroad. Years later when the detroit exploded, replaced it with another truetrac, since I wasn't doing enough rocks to really 'need' a locker. Found that a pair of truetracs was perfect for my offroad use, and the few times I got myself stuck (high centered or frame deep in mud
), a pair of detroits wouldn't have helped - that's what a winch is for, right?I don't know how "Independent" this testing was, but seems to be good info.
