I'd bet removing the front driveshaft would be good for an MPG or 2 with a non agressive driving style.

Assuming you are not turning, I've often wondered if starting in 4HI to say 40 mph might actually improve MPGs since I was applying equal engine energy to all 4 wheels instead of using two to turn essentially all the same parts less the transfer case gears. Could potentially improve 0-40 times too???
The tires are not all the same size. Once the axles are locked together, there is more drag.

It will improve 0-40 time only if the rear tires slip in 2wd, and no tires slip in 4wd, and you have enough horsepower to take full advantage of the extra traction.

The rated highway MPG for a 2wd Unlimited is only 1 mpg more. The comparison is essentially the same.

i just figured most of the resistance came form the ring gear and pinion moving through the thick 80/90 gear oil, til you create a lil heat to somewhat thin it down. Bottom line is it would be nice to have the lock outs, wouldnt get them for the mpg's but it would be nice to saves some wear and tear off the front diff. maybe after i shell my d 30 i look at this option. unless the price goes down thats alot of coin!!!
