notching tranny skid, is it self explanatory?
So the boot inevitably is going to tear on a 2.5"+ lift? Nothing will prevent it? I understand it takes a certain amount of flex for it to happen.
Tim and Jason, I'll get in on that action, too. I need to notch mine.
I'll bring some brews and we can have a notch party.
Just let me know when and where... any evening or weekend is good for me.

Well, I'm ordering my lift on Friday, so as soon as it comes in I will post up a place and time in the South's forum. I figure if we get enough people, we can bang out all the notching, hack up (I mean carefully cut and trim) Jason's fenders, and get my lift in all in one day. I will also supply some frosty cold beverages.
I did this two week ends ago. Sawzall and a 4.5" angle grinder and paint took about and hour.
If you put it up on jack stands and let the suspension drop you can pretty much see where it needs to be trimmed.

Now if you flex the crap out of your front you might still tear it, but it usually wont destroy it like it will with the metal clamp. I went through 3 drive shafts before I switched to the zip-ties. I've had mine out in some pretty tough spots and it has help up great.
One thing you can do to help prevent the boot from tearing is to remove the metal clamp holding the boot to the drive shaft. The little metal nub is what hits the tranny and causes the boot to tear. I cut mine off and replaced it with two zip-ties, that way you still keep the dirt and gunk out, but if it makes contact with the tranny the plastic zip-tie will break off where as the metal clamp twists and tears the boot as it goes.

Okay even after market DS you may be experiencing flex issues if you are running the 1350HD shafts like we are and your DS hits you only need to make some slight adjustments to the skid to fix the issue. Here's some pics I snapped and I could do a write up if needed but like the OP says it's pretty much self explanatory
