Default oversize tire carrier?

i got a new jc whitney catalouge today and i was thumbing thru it when i came across the highrock 4x4 oversize tire carrier. does anybody have any insight to this thing? i am looking for something to put a 315/70/17 on and have been thinking about just the aev tire carrier. this highrock carrier says it will support up to 200lbs but my question is will the hinges on the tailgate support that amount of weight?

Man the gate cant handle a 35 on the factory carrier, it definitly cant handle a 35 on a bigger heavier carrier.

Bumper mounted carrier or run your spare in the back of your rig.

Default tire carrier

The whole point for a aftermarket tire carrier is to GET THE WEIGHT OFF THE TAILGATE. So why would you spend money on one that bolts directly to gate when the best way to carry weight is to transfer it to the frame like a LoD .......etc.

I've got a Smittybilt oversized tire carrier on mine, which is the exact same thing (Exept you can get it for about $150 cheaper) and I have a 35" BFG / AT mounted on it with no problems what so ever. It moves the tire up and is 1" closer to the tailgate with verticle bars for the tire to snug up to. It is solid as a rock, and tailgate works just fine. I ordered from "Truck Customizers" with free shipping for $89.60. Took about a week for delivery.

I ran alot of dirt roads around my farm and woodland as well as getting to work ect. I travel FAST on them. Averaging probly 55 to 60 mph and they arent smooth. I wore the hinges out on my gate with the stock dueller on a 18" sahara rim. So take that for what you will, but that means to me that the stock hinges and gate just CANNOT take the stress of off roading or even high mileage road driving.

Really, a true 35? I know this thread has been idle for some time, but I just got my 35" KM2's. I did a bit of measuring first and learned that the tire is a bit too large to fit. I then bolted it up anyway with the tail gate open just to see how much modificatiojn would be required for fitment.

I need to lift the carrier at least 3/4" for the wheel/tire to clear the factory bumper. Otherwise, the combo seems to fit OK. Anyways, since it won't fit I am looking over whats available. I am surprised by how light weight the OEM mount is! It is amazing it doesn't break under the stress of the stock wheel and tire combo.

Guess I'll be doing some more research to decide which way to go. I didn't really want to go with a new bumper.
