Default regearing BEFORE getting tires. 4.88 on stock sport

i was curious if anyone has regeared first, then got tires. my sport is bone stock right now. 4.88 are definitely on my list of first things to do along with 33"s. how bad would it be if i regeared first? would it feel like im driving a tractor trailer?

If you're only planning on going with 33" tires, you really don't have to regear. I would try driving with the 33s first and see if you still think you need lower gears. 4.88s on the stock (29"?) tires is a bit much.

No profile.

Manual- don't worry about gearing.
Auto - go for it.

Open the Drivetrain faq's and start plugging some numbers in to get an idea of where you will end up. (I drove my auto 4door for about 6 months with 5.13's and 32" 'actual' height tires. No issues other than o/d off towing on the freeway)

I would go with the tires first. Then gears & lockers next. After driving it you may decide you are good with the 3.73 or you may decide to go with a deeper gear if you have a auto transmission.

Default 3.21 vs 4.88

I ran 4.88 gears with 32 inch tires for as many days as it took for the new 35 inch tires to arrive. The RPM's with 4.88 on 32's was so high that I couldn't run the interstate. The 4.88 with 35's has the RPM of 3000 at 75 mph. I'm going to use
37's as soon as the 35's wear out. Know exactly what you are getting the first time around or you could pay twice for tire sizes.

As noted back in post #3, there is an RPM chart in the faq's. Open it and plug some numbers in. Be sure to use 'actual' tire heights, not mfg's specs...)

I ran 5.13's w/ a 6 speed and 31.5" (actual, on the road) tall tires for 6 months. Get rid of the 3.21's ASAP. You won't regret it...unless you drive a lot of Interstate and think driving a Jeep fast is a good thing. I don't do either of those things.
