Default Rugged Ridge XHD tire carrier install problems

Has anyone got photos or details of an installed XHD tire carrier?

Mine is on a 2008 Rubicon JK and have 2 problems.

1. The bumper stops that were provided appear to be much too large.
2. The spare mounting does not appear to be big enough at the maximum extension, I have stock rims with 285/70R17 tires which are just over stock.

I am in contact with RR and they have been responsive but have not really explained why I am struggling.

If you want I can get pics tomorrow, but I run the RR tire carrier and run 315/70/17s. I used my bump stops, just cut them down so when closed it's tight to the carrier. It works fine.

Look forward to seeing your photos and see if the bumper stops look the same as mine. It seems that they are too big and the rubber stops on the gate need to be cut almost completely down.

Easy fix.

You need to adjust the plate that hits your bump stops. If you look at the plate that is hitting the bump stop there are two bolts. Loosen them up and push it forward or back depending on what way you need to adjust them. Judgin by your photo it looks like you need to do it forward to make more room. Mine are all the way forward I believe. As for the tire nor reaching te bottom the only thing I can say is this is made for up to a 35" tire and could play a factor but don't take my word on it. Let me know If you need more details .

The problem is with the plate I have it cannot be adjusted further as it hits the tire on the stock Rubicon wheels.

I run this very same bumper with a 37x13.50 Toyo, so trust me, your spare tire WILL fit

Just cut or remove those rubber bumpstops on the tailgate.

Ok, here are some pics.

Make sure the tire bracket is fully extended so you get all the room you can.

Next, make sure the tire stop bracket is all the way against the tire, which I think you have already done.

Then I removed the tire stops, closed the tire carrier, measure the distance between the rear door to the tire stop bracket. I then added a little to it so the tire and the bracket were tight when closed so you get less shaking. I cut the tire stops with a hand saw.

Hope that helps!!

Less shaking, so it pretty much shakes still?

When you are off road you will get a little shaking, but it is not at all bad. On the road it's solid.

Is your tire carrier bracket extended fully? Maybe this is the problem?
