Shock direction

So the more and more I look at others jeep I see shocks are installed in different directions both front vs. back. What's the proper direction for a shock or does it just depend on the type of absorber?

My rears are piston rod down and fronts are piston rod up (bilstein 5100).

Bilsteins are easy to figure out, if you can read the label they are on the right way. I have Bilsteins and the fronts are rod on top and backs rod on bottom but labels all read right way up. When I looked into it I think it was the company website that said mount them so the label is not upside down

The shocks can only be installed one way unless the mounts have been modified.

Having the shaft on the bottom end or upper end of the shock is up to the manufacturer, they're all different.

Fox has the shaft on the bottom end for both front & rear. Teraflex has the shaft on the upper end of the shock for both front & rear.

Ya I was 99% sure mine were good but I saw another JK with bilsteins in the back with rod up and I was like that doesn't look right...

Well I'm sure this we'll help some realize theirs are upside down.

Thx

I was going to say the same thing Joe_B said, then noticed he already said it.
We don't have the option to cancel a post like we used to, so I just went with the "........".

I haven't been keeping track. (Ironic, because I do maintain track.)
