ok, what i want to know is how the different gear ratios in your transmission, transfer case, axles work together to give you your final output.

The "final output" as you put it is the final output. Regardless of anything else. It does not change. It can be AFFECTED by other things, such as transfer cases, transmission ratios, overdrive ratios, and tire size, but the final drive ratio (the ring and pinion) does not change. If you want something more specific, fire away.

ok, what confuses me is this. if the transfer case has a 4.1:1 crawl ratio, and the axles have 4.10s, would the gears combine for a total ratio of 8.2:1 or would they cancel each other out?

4.1 x 4.1 = 16.81

Yup, ronjenx is right on top of it. It all works the same....overdrives, transfer cases and different transmission ratios. When I was drag racing, I used to mess around with my automatic transmission ratios all the time. All my buddies always wondered why my 60 foot times were suck a killer. LOL
