Yes, but I was thinking more along the lines of making a section parallel to the linkage, essentially creating a spacer if you will to minimize the free play and tighten up the slack.

I think you're on the right track with re-purposed bike parts, but I'd go with grease as the last resort.

Roll a rubber O ring onto the spring part.
