Because it's attractive to folks that have a smaller budget, don't like drilling into their paint, and just want to protect their investment from brush and branches. Same reasons that I'm waiting for guards for the windsheild posts.

Thank you for the clarity in your reply. It looked similar to the plastic clad material I've seen on other rigs.

I have seen plastic diamond plate looking ones. Not sure I liked 'em that much. Those did look plastic in the picture and I still liked them.

Yeah, that's where I was planning to strap my own bicycle. (Damn, I've been trapped into admitting it!) I like to scare pedestrians on campus with it.
