very temporary violent steering wobble
I have a 2012 2-dr with AEV 3" lift kit and 35" BFGs installed when the JK was new. It now has 17K miles. Lately, and only occasionally, if I hit a high, uneven pavement seam, the steering wheel jerks left/right/left/right and then comes under control very quickly. Other than that it drives like a champ. It has an Old Man Emu (big & yellow) steering stabilizer. Is it possible that part is worn out already?

I still get the same problem from time to time... And the old JK/Jeep heads just tell me it's apart of owning a Wrangler... But I did replace my Older OME stabilizer with a new one and it really reduced the vibrations/wobble. But I do from time to time get a wobble that makes me slow down to regain equlibrium...
I'm actually looking to upgrade to the dual stabilizer kit from Rough Country, I like the design and the fact that the stabilizers are 5200 series Bilstein shocks... That's my .02 cents... |

Agreed, but you will still have situations espeically at highway speeds that will cause vibrations/wobbles... The larger your tires get the more momentum they carry and once they get off balanced it's going to wobble some... So tire rotation and balance are key over time...
But from what I've read the dual steering stabilizers help with both on road comfort while reducing wobble and offroad steering vibrations... But yes the first thing from that link is to upgrade your stock suspension bolts to a tighter fitting bolt... Swapping out the stock 14mm bolts for 9/16" bolts really tighten things up... For me I was running the dual steering stabilizers which tend to mask the DW problem. Then I blew one of them and removed the SS which exposed a case of DW. Unfortunately, there are so many different things that seem like DW but aren't but trust me we had it two times and ended up replacing so many different components to chase it down. Shimmy and wheel balance issues can be addressed by Dual SS but if the root cause is DW they only mask the problem and you end up replacing more components in the long run. A good test is to run without any steering stabilizer. If you can do that then problems are solved. Usually, the Track Bar is the root cause to many of these issues so I always makes sure at a minimum to re torque them to spec. Your comments about the tires are good I've had times where we had some issues caused by throwing a wheel weight or even mud build up inside the inner wheel. |
