What tires would you buy?
I was originally going to put 35x13.50x15 BFG Krawlers on a set of steel wheels and only run them when I went wheeling. However, after looking at my JK unlimited with a 3 inch lift and the stock rubber, I have decided the thing looks pretty silly. Therefore, I am going to run 35’s full time on the stock rims. I just bought spidertrax spacers and now I just need to buy tires. The problem is I can’t decide what tire to purchase. I want a mud tire that will handle well on the road, as my jk is my daily driver, but I also want one that will work well on the rocks. I realize that long tread life and sticky compounds don’t typically go hand in, but is there a mud tire out there in a 35x12.50x15 or 315x70x17 range that offers the best of both worlds at a reasonable value. I like the Toyo MT’s, but they are almost $350 a tire. The two tires I am most curious about are the Mickey Thompson MTZ and the Dick Cepek Mud Country as they are about $200 a tire. Has anybody run these tires? If so, how have they performed for you.

yes they are 1.5 inch spacers. I bought them directly from Spidertrax as they are local to me here in Colorado. However, they are sold out on that item, but you can buy them online from

My wife has a set of 35" MTZ's on her early Bronco. They are great on the road and in the sand, but haven't had them in the mud or on rocks.
The Toyo's are an excellent tire also (I ran 37's on my Super Duty), but not $100+ per tire better than MTZ's...
The Cooper STT's appear to have a very similar tread pattern to the Toyo's, at a more resonable price. Hope this helps.

How about some of these. I got some Hankook DynaPro MT RT03's, 315/70/17 (approx 34.5" tall) mounted on some Jeep Commander Hulk wheels which are 17x7.5 (same size as the stock 17's.) They fit on the rims well. Here are a few pictures. That's a stock ride height 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC in the background for reference. I got all five tires including mount/balance/tax for $978, which was $195 a piece.

Check out what people are saying about the Hankooks. They say they are only slightly louder that an AT tire and a lot quieter that other MT's they have owned.
