Default Wheel Width?

My local shop is telling me none of the wheels I have chosen will work with 12" wide tires. They say it has to be within 2". Is this correct? I thought the wheels were supposed to be considerably thiner than the tires for trail damage or the lack there of. What is the desired wheel width for 12" wide tires? What is the minimum without sacrificing anything?

Thanks Guys, this is holding up my mods and I gotta figure it out.

within 2" is a 10" wide rim and those bring the suck.
8" wide with a 12" wide tire, it holds the bead better, looks better and profiles the tire just fine. You could even go 9" wide as a lot of 17's are only offered in that.

My tires will be 35" Nitto Mudd Grapplers or Mickie Thomson Radial Baja Claws. My wheels now are just stock Rubicon wheels which I don't know the width of.

So I can use an 8-9" Wide wheel with 35"x 12.5" x 18" Tires?

I think this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Or is appying standard wheel rules to a Jeep/Offroad application.

Thanks Guys.....let me know what my range of options are but best performance.

stock wheels I think are 7" or 8"

yes, have 35x12.5 radial claws on 15x8 wheels

I think he is retarded and trying to sell you some shit. even in car tires you want the correct sidewall profile and they are not always "flat"

You have a shitload of options EVERYBODY makes a 8" wide rim. now you have to choose your rim diameter, steel or aluminum and go shopping.

I'm running the Nitto M.G.'s on an 18X8.5. It's fine, your tire guy doesn't know his shit. You can use them on the 7.5" factory wheels and they'll be fine.

Thanks Guys.....LOL...what an idiot!! He said I need a !0" or wider wheel. He said the rule of thumb is never more than 2" less than the tire width.

Now I need to go shopping again! Thanks!

Was this a local tire store? Also, on my previous jeep, an 84 CJ7, I was running 38x14.50x16's on 16x10 wheels, same difference.

Watch out...your stock Rubicon wheels are not 18's as you've listed above. And yes, 35x12.50-17's will work just fine on stock Rubicon wheels. They will require less air pressure to keep a flat footprint, but they will work. I think 17x9's are the "right" setup, but I''m using the 17x7.5's with no problems.

I didn't say my stock wheels are 18". I am not using my stock wheels.....that's the whole point of this thread.....to figure out what width wheel I need since he told me all my 7"- 9" wide choices wouldn't work with a 12" wide tire.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, its a local tire shop that does lifts and such also.
