Default winch help

Ok. So i am having issues with my winch. Even though its on a tj. It shouldn't really matter if i put this in the jk part. Its a champion 8k. And one day i decided to try it and put the jeep on level ground and in neutral. Pulled the cable and hooked it to a truck and started pulling... it pulled the cable tight and moved the jeep 5 inches and then the drum would spin but it wouldn't pull anymore cable in... and i put a pulley in and it pulled the jeep a couple more inches than before and did the same thing... so is it the clutch? Or the gears? Any ideas? Thankyou in advance

If the drum is turning but not pulling cable maybe the cable is not connected properly to the drum. If the motor is turning but not the drum then likely something is up with the clutch engagement. You can pull the cover on the planetary gears to see what is going on.

Most Ive seen use a small allen screw that goes thru a thimble on the end of the cable and attaches it to the drum.

Disengage the clutch pull it all the way out see if the little Allen bolt is not sheared off. Re engage the clutch leaver hand feed the drum with a little tension. If it won't spool it's the brake not the clutch. If you put no tension on line and it still won't spool it could be the clutch is still in neutral. You can hear the winch when it's engaged it makes a different noise.

My guess its the brake.
