winter effect
 

Hey guy's,
I'm looking to get chrome wheels but i'm not sure how they'll hold up in the winter months with road salt. If there's anyone out there with chrome wheels that runs them in the winter. could you please let me know how they're holding up and what brand of wheel you would recommend. I live in Windsor Ontario Canada and I don't want to spend the money if they're not going to last.

I have black rims. No problem whatsoever. My g/f drives a F150 CrewCab with the Heartland package, aka, a lot of chrome. She has Roush (not sure if I spelled that right) chrome rims. The road salt ate them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We live in Iowa and had a hellish winter and now drive bass boats to work with all of the floods. In my opinion I would not recommend chrome if you have a lot of road salt and are a low maintenance person. This winter I will be washing them weekly to try to help reduce the feedings.

getting mickey thompson classics im just going to lay on the wax thick for the winter , could even coat them with silicone, vasoline , snake oil or something :eek2:

This is what I have done the last few years.

Use your stocker rims and get some true winter tires on your stock rims.

You purchase your nice Chrome rims and get some nice Mudder's/All-terrain tires and just use them strictly for the Spring/Summer/Fall to avoid any Salt/gravel/Bromide issues staining your Chrome Rims. You can wash the chrome rims all you want, BUT you will get a few Rock dings/chips on your Chrome rims from the gravel they spread in the Winters.

Also, doing this you should get 4 to 6 winters on your winter tires. And 3 to 5 years wear on your Mudder's/all-terrain tires.

I kept my stock rims for winter on the JK. My TJ had black Cragars with chrome center caps and the wheels held up fine but the chrome center caps and lug nuts all rusted and pitted pretty bad.

Kinda depends on what exactly they use on the roads up there. If it's actual salt, it'll eat 'em alive, but if it's mag chloride, you just gotta wash them every few days and you should be fine. You'll still get some dings and stuff from all the gravel they put down too. My stockers held up awesome in the 7 1/2 months winter lasted this year

Thanks for all the info guys. It seems like chrome might be out of the question for me. I might go with the black painted rims or mount 35's on my stock wheels to maintain a contrast between my black jeep and the rims.

With chrome, all it take is a few nicks and a bit of salt and they will start peeling like a banana. If you like bright and shiny why not go with polished aluminum? When I first got mine I couldn't believe they weren't chrome they were so shiny. Sure now they've dulled a little, but all it takes is a little polish and they shine like the sun again. My Eagle Alloys are actually called "super finish".
